As a classroom teacher, school leader and researcher, I continue to explore and trial practical ways to create calm, predictable learning environments that support both students and the people who work within them.
Over time, my work has led me back to one guiding principle:
There is a quieter, more grounded way to do school.
What I Notice
Most children come to school curious, capable, and ready to make sense of the world. But somewhere along the way, things can become rushed, controlled, and not always in ways that support deep learning.
At the same time, teachers and school leaders are doing an extraordinary job holding everything together, often with very little space to pause, reflect, and think about what really matters.
What Matters to Me
I care about learning environments - classrooms and schools - that feel calm and settled. Places where children can think, imagine, create, and be themselves. Not just keep up.
I don’t believe good learning comes from pressure or constant instruction. I think it grows from strong relationships, thoughtful environments, creativity, and giving things the time they need.
It often comes from stripping things back and focusing on what actually works.
Broadening the Work
Over time, my work has also expanded beyond the classroom.
I’ve become increasingly interested in the conditions that shape schools more broadly, particularly the experience of those leading them.
In regional and remote contexts, school leadership is deeply relational. It is shaped by community, place, and the complexity of working closely within both.
This has become a central focus of my current research and project work.
My Work
I’ve worked across classrooms, school leadership, and alongside educators in a range of roles. My work is grounded in practice, shaped by experience, and informed by ongoing study in education and community development.
At the moment, I’m focused on developing and refining resources through Peaceful Schools — practical approaches that reflect what I’ve seen make a difference over time.
Alongside this, I am developing a body of work focused on leadership, wellbeing, and the conditions that support sustainable practice in schools, particularly in regional and remote settings.
For Now
I’m not offering consulting at the moment.
This space is here to share my thinking and the work I’m continuing to develop.
If you’re here, perhaps something here feels familiar.
ABOUT ME
I didn’t come into education with a set of programs or a particular approach to follow.
What I had, from early on, was a strong sense that children needed space. Space to think, to imagine, to move at their own pace, and to make sense of the world in their own way.
Over time, that sense has deepened through my work as a teacher, school leader, and through further study in education and community development.
I’ve seen just how much is asked of both children and the people who work with them.
There is often a push to do more, add more, and respond quickly.
But in practice, the environments that feel right are usually doing something else.
They are calmer.
More settled.
Less rushed.
There is time to think. Time to notice. Time to get things right.
My work has been shaped by years in classrooms, alongside a long-standing interest in whole-child education, learning through nature, and the broader conditions that support meaningful learning.
I find myself returning, again and again, to the same place:
Stripping things back and focusing on what actually works.
At the moment, my focus is on developing resources through Peaceful Schools, alongside a growing body of work exploring leadership, wellbeing, and community-based approaches to sustaining schools.
This is ongoing work, and it continues to evolve over time.
